Former Oyo state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi has died due to underlying health conditions worsened by Coronavirus. He was aged 70 years.
The two-term governor and former senator died on Thursday, at First Cardiology Consultants Hospital in Ikoyi, where he was comatose and hooked on the ventilator, for close to three weeks.
Last week, his death went viral and it was confirmed by top journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, who took to Twitter to reveal that a source who has never been wrong told him that the former governor is dead, a claim that his media aide, Bolaji Tunji and family debunked.
His death came after President Buhari at a virtual meeting in Abuja dissolved the National Executive Committee of All Progressive Congress, APC.
Ajimobi became a deputy chairman of the APC in March. He was expected to steer the party after the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as chairman.
Today, the NEC of his party swept all members of the National Working Committee away, including Ajimobi
Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi was born on 16 December, 1949.
He was formerly the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company a subsidiary of Shell Petroleum, Nigeria.
After early education in Nigeria, he went to the United States for further studies. He studied Business Administration and Finance at the State University of New York, in Buffalo, New York.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and later went to Chicago for an MBA. He studied at Governors State University, University Park, Illinois.
He joined politics in 2003, contesting for a senate seat on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy. He won the election.
He made a futile bid for governor of Oyo State in 2007. He failed. Four years after, he tried again.
He was elected twice and re-elected in 2015, the first governor in Oyo state to win re-election.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, who he married in 1980, children and grandchildren.
