A win for Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday would have moved them within six points of fourth placed Chelsea. Instead, a 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United leaves them battling for a Champions League spot next season.
The newly-promoted United team started what would become their first win since the Premier League restart in the 31st minute through Sander Berge.
Another controversial decision from the VAR saw Spurs‘ equaliser ruled out in the 33rd minute after Harry Kane thought he had restored parity. Replay showed that Brazillian attacker, Luxas Moura had handled the ball in the build-up, whereas, he was fouled by a Sheffield player and the ball hit his hand.
There would be no hope of a comeback in the 69th minute though, as Lys Mousset’s tap in doubled the Blades lead.
Oliver McBurnie sealed a famous win for the hosts six minutes from time.
Spurs had to make do with a consolation goal in the 90th minute from England captain, Kane.
The defeat leaves Spurs in the ninth position with 45 points as Sheffield moved up to seventh with 47 points.
