Bayern Munich have won a tense finale against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Sunday to be crowned UEFA Champions League winners.
The much anticipated clash between the German champions and the French champions was decided in the 59th minute with a solitary header from Kingsley Coman.
Afer an interesting but goalless first half, Bayern‘s Joshua Kimmich gave an inviting cross into the box, with Coman – who formerly played for PSG- only happy to head past Keylor Navas from close range into the bottom right corner.
It is the sixth Champions League trophy for Bayern Munich and their first since defeating rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
Before the Coman salvation though, Die Roten had to rely on the brilliance of Manuel Neuer to keep PSG star Neymar at bay in the 18th minute. Neymar’s strike seemed destined to the bottom right corner but Neuer was his team’s saving grace as he superbly stopped the ball from rolling into the net.
It was Bayern’s turn to ask questions in the 22nd minute when top-scorer Robert Lewandowski received a lofted pass from the side and shot from around the penalty spot, but his effort could only go near the left post.
Lewandowski was involved again, forcing a superb save from Navas in the 31st minute from a header.
French ace Kylian Mbappe was also in the mix minutes to the end of the first half, making sure Neuer was alert to save his tame effort.
Coman attempted to inflict more pain to his former employers, this time taking a first-time shot inside the box after latching onto a nice lofted pass in the 63rd minutes but his effort was blocked.
PSG may have hoped for a first ever Champions League triumph in the game and came close to an equaliser in the 70th minute, with Marquinhos taking an early shot, but they could not break a spirited Neuer, and they could not prevent Hans-Dieter Flick’s men from completing the treble in the 2019/20 season.
