American media mogul, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey was honored at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, also known as the Golden Globes 2018, with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
This makes her the first black woman and second black after Sidney Poitier, to win the coveted award.
Oprah Winfrey gave one of the most iconic speeches of all time at the when she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
The award was given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for incredible contributions to the entertainment industry.
The awards which was hosted by Seth Myers saw the biggest actors and actresses, gather at the prestigious Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
Actress Reese Witherspoon presented the 63-year-old actress and media mogul with the honour saying Winfrey’s hugs “the greatest thing ever.”
Winfrey, who stars in the upcoming movie A Wrinkle In Time, delivered an impassioned monologue talking about racism, sexism and the #MeToo movement and even honoured Rosa Parks and the late Civil Rights icon Recy Taylor.
“It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there is some little girl watching as I become the first Black woman to be given the same award,” Winfrey said in her powerful speech. “It is an honour and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them.”
She later discussed the importance of women coming forward with their experiences of sexual assault.
“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men,” winfrey said. But their time is up. Their time is up. Their time is up.
After repeatedly saying “time is up” Winfrey received a standing ovation from the audience.
Oldman was one of the few British successes on the night, along with Ewan McGregor who won for his role in the TV drama Fargo.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, about an enraged woman seeking vengeance for her murdered daughter in a small town, won the Golden Globe award for best drama film, completing an impressive night with four awards.
Its star Frances McDormand, supporting actor Sam Rockwell, its writer-director, Martin McDonagh, were all honoured.
The night was shot through with references – joking and pointed – to the sexual harassment scandal that has enveloped Hollywood ever since the unmasking of Weinstein.
Seth Meyers opened his stint as host with a string of well received jokes about the “elephant not in the room”.
He started by saying: “Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen,” before adding it would be the first time in months that men won’t be terrified to hear their names read out loud, before singling out Kevin Spacey and Woody Allen for particular attention.
